15 Jun 2016 Young Parents Summit
By Nataly Barrera, Chicagoland Organizing Manager.
On Thursday, May 26th, ICAH, in collaboration with Dr. Pedro Albizu Campos Puerto Rican High School, hosted a summit for young parents. Over 30 pregnant and parenting young people and 25 adults that work with young people were in attendance.
The youth summit was an opportunity for pregnant and parenting youth to voice their experiences with schools and healthcare systems, receive resources and information about pregnancy and labor, and learn about their rights to remain in schools and succeed academically. Youth shared stories about the barriers they faced as young parents, including words of wisdom and encouragement for other young parents, and educated adults about how to work together with young parents free of shame and judgment.
During the summit, ICAH unveiled its newly created Birth Justice Toolkit: a comprehensive guide with easily accessible information and resources about pregnancy, labor, and postpartum. We also shared a Title IX model policy that we hope schools throughout Illinois will adopt to better support the academic success of pregnant and parenting students. We hope this event uplifts the strength and resilience of young parents and reduces the stigma and shame often associated with them.
Thanks to all those that attended the event!
