ICAH School of Justice Update

ICAH School of Justice (SOJ) Update - Oct. 27, 2011

The School of Justice program gathered for its second convening in Chicago on Friday, September 30 through Sunday, October 2nd.  With 57 youth in attendance, we proudly supported the AIDS Foundation of Chicago (AFC) in their annual AIDS Walk & Run! Youth and adult allies walked from Grant Park around the lake front in solidarity with AFC supporters.

Along with the AIDS Walk & Run, SOJ participants engaged in a weekend full of  workshops related to social justice, navigating conversations about Power & Oppression, Sex Ed, Consent and Confidentiality, and Sex-Ed Policy and Advocacy.  In their nine small groups, youth members brainstormed goals and objectives for their respective issue campaigns, all of which revolve around sexual health care access.

These campaigns will launch in the near future, and we at ICAH are excited to utilize social media to share our work.  The School of Justice (SOJ) program is looking forward to continuing movement building and will reconvene in East St. Louis in January 2012! For more information about the SOJ program, please contact ICAH's SOJ Team: Nikki Zaleski, Tiffany Pryor and Maya Patitucci Cruz.

Also, it's not too late to join SOJ, so if you know of any youth who would be interested in participating in this program. For an application, please contact one of the three ICAH staff members noted above. ICAH will get the new youth up to speed in time for the next convening!

ICAH School of Justice (SOJ) Update - Sept. 30, 2011

ICAH's new and improved School of Justice 2011 had its orientation the weekend of August 26th in Chicago with more than 45 youth from Chicago, Maywood, East St.Louis, Springfield, Freeport, Joliet and DeKalb in attendance.

The orientation is the first of many  SOJ convenings to take place throughout the State during the 2011-2012 school year. ICAH has revamped the program to be more intentional of it's State-wide presence, providing programming and curriculum that reaches youth in marginalized communities.

Young pregnant and parenting rights, sexual education, and youth and self care were just some of the thoughtful workshops and reflective discussions that were had. Look for more information on SOJ youth's upcoming work in nine of ICAH campaigns.

These nine ICAH campaign initiatives will focus on sexual health peer education, peer education for foster youth, peer education through the media, Art Justice, Queer Justice, Pregnant and Parenting Youth, Sexual Healthcare Access, Grassroots Fund raising, and the Illinois Youth Policy Council.

ICAH also hosted a SOJ convening the weekend of the AIDS Walk & Run, Sept. 30 through Oct. 2nd in Chicago.
